Meteorologists now expect 13 tropical storms this year and five hurricanes, two of which will be intense—Category 3 or higher, with winds in excess of 111 miles per hour. Two tropical storms, Alberto and Beryl, formed before the official beginning of the hurricane season. A third storm, Chris, became the year’s first hurricane on June 19. It formed unusually far north, close to Newfoundland, but posed no threat to land.Ìý
