NEW YORK, OCT. 3, 2002 -- Standard homeowners and business insurance policies provide coverage for damage from windstorms such as Hurricane Lili.
These policies, however, do not cover damage from flooding. Flood damage is covered under policies written by the federal government's National Flood 探花精选 Program or by "Write-Your-Own" insurers.
The "comprehensive" portion of automobile insurance policies covers losses due to flooding, mudflow and mudslide, but not all drivers purchase comprehensive coverage, which is frequently dropped as a car's market value declines.
The $15.5 billion insurance claim payout from Hurricane Andrew in 1992 is the most costly natural disaster loss in U.S. history.
